Surgical Residency (DO)

INTRODUCTION

Message from the Director of Surgery

Stephen DiRusso, M.D. PhD.

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the St. Barnabas Surgical Residency Program.

Our website was designed to demonstrate the many and varied activities and strengths of our department as they relate to the education of the surgical resident.

It is an exciting time for our department.  I have just recently assumed the role of Surgical Director and am excited for the prospects and new paths that will open up for us in the future.  Dr. Joseph Edwards, the previous director, has developed an exemplary structure and it is my plan to build upon this and over the coming years to expand, solidify and progress the department to become the preeminent surgical entity in the area and to help fulfill the mission of St. Barnabas Hospital, which is to provide ”service to the community”.

The program has many strengths, including being one of the only Osteopathic Surgical Residencies associated with a Level I Trauma Center, one of the busiest in New York City.  St. Barnabas Hospital is also a vibrant and integral part of the Bronx community.  The hospital continues to expand, and has just finished construction of a new Clinic Center and is completing the addition of 6 operating rooms in its surgical suite.

The Surgery Department is committed to developing the best possible surgical education program and to train exemplary and well-rounded surgeons.

Message From the Residency Director
