The Internal Medicine Track Internship may be
utilized as the first year in an AOA Internal Medicine residency program. This
track therefore offers advanced standing in the AOA approved Internal Medicine
residency program at NYCOM/St. Barnabas Hospital. Interns in this track can go
on to complete their AOA internal medicine residency training in two additional
years. The internal medicine track internship is designed to preserve the key
elements of the rotating internship while providing the early foundation for a
career in internal medicine. The program is comprised of thirteen four-week
rotations, allowing for twelve clinical four week rotations and four weeks of
vacation. The rotations are divided as follows:
General Medicine
On the Medicine service, the intern will work
side by side with PGY1 and PGY2 internal medicine residents. Supervision will
be provided by senior residents and attending physicians. The following
rotations are provided:
12 Weeks of In-Patient General Medicine
service
4 Weeks night float
4 Weeks neurology (inpatient/consultation
service)
4 Weeks intensive care medicine
Emergency Medicine
During this 4 week rotation, the intern will
work under the supervision of emergency medicine attending physicians and
residents.
Surgery
During this 4 week rotation, the intern will
work under the supervision of attending surgeons and surgical residents. This
is primarily an in-patient service, but time will be allotted for training in
the outpatient surgical clinic.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
During this 4 week rotation, interns will work
under the direct supervision of the ob/gyn attending physicians. In-patient
ob/gyn, labor and delivery and outpatient ob/gyn services are all provided at
St. Barnabas Hospital.
Pediatrics
During this 4 week rotation, interns will work
under the supervision of attending pediatricians on the pediatric floor,
pediatric emergency department, newborn nursery and outpatient clinics.
Selective
Interns may choose a 4-week rotation in
internal medicine (office-based) or a medicine subspecialty.
Ambulatory Care
During this 4-week rotation, interns will work
in the outpatient internal medicine ambulatory care clinics under the
supervision of internal medicine attending physicians. This setting provides
more of a "private practice" rather than an "institutional" atmosphere.
Vacation
Interns are provided with 4 weeks of vacation
time.
Outpatient Continuity Care Clinic
During the one-year program, the intern
maintains an outpatient continuity of care clinic for two afternoon sessions
per week. Clinic sessions will be required only during internal medicine and
subspecialty selective rotations.
