The Family Practice Emphasis Tract Internship is
comprised of thirteen four week rotations. This allows for twelve rotations and
four weeks of vacation. This tract is designed to give you an introduction to
what a family practice residency will be like. New York State approves the St.
Barnabas Family Practice Emphasis Tract and Residency for the N.Y.S. Loan
Forgiveness and Repayment Program. For details, please see the tract director.
The rotations are divided as follows:
Family Practice Clinic
Interns spend one half day per week in the
Family Practice Clinic developing a panel of continuity patients whom they
will continue to care for as they enter the Family Practice Residency. We
assign interns a specific clinic session for the year and they are responsible
for keeping that session despite other rotation duties unless specifically
excused by the tract director.
5 Months of Medicine
On the Medicine service, the intern will work
side by side with PGY1 Internal Medicine Residents under the supervision of
Attending Internists and Senior Residents. Time on the Medicine Service is
broken down as follows:
4 Months of In-Patient Medicine
1 Month of Intensive Care Medicine
3 Months of Surgery
On the Surgical service, Interns will
work under the supervision of Attending Surgeons and Surgical Residents. We
divide the time among inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, ambulatory surgery
and the operating room.
1 Month of Emergency Medicine
On the emergency medicine service, the intern
will work under the supervision of emergency medicine attendings and
residents. St. Barnabas and New York United Medical Center are training sites
and provide a large, broad-based patient population.

On the Ob/Gyn service, Interns work under the
supervision of Attending Physicians. We divide time among outpatient clinics,

the supervision of attending pediatricians. We divide time among the
