Surgical Critical Care

INTRODUCTION:  Surgical Critical Care is an ESSENTIAL part of surgery and surgical education.  The medical students rotating on General Surgery will be expected to achieve a basic understanding of the principles of critical care as they apply to the surgical patient.

The Society of Critical Care Medicine has developed an Educational Program (see link).  Although this is designed for resident education there are several basic modules that will be required for the medical students to do while on their surgical rotation.

  • Airway Management Module

  • Acute Lung Injury Module

  • Basics of Mechanical Ventilation

  • Arterial Blood Gas Interpretation

  • Shock

  • Sepsis and Septic Shock

  • Surgical Issues in Critical Care Medicine

A required “quiz” will be given at the end of the rotation to assess student competence in this area

There is also the “optional” Pulmonary Artery Catheter Educational Project course which is EXCELLENT and is FREE.  This gives a great understanding on the use and interpretation of the PA-Catheter
