Medical Students

WELCOME TO THE GENERAL SURGICAL MEDICAL STUDENT ROTATION

General Overview - Welcome aboard! It is our expectation that this rotation will be both enjoyable and educational.  For 3rd year AOA medical students this will be 12 week rotation in which you will rotate on general surgical services to gain the broadest experience possible. The residents, faculty and staff will work hard to fulfill our objectives for this rotation

Expectations - Surgery in general has one major rule: IT IS TEAM ORIENTED and therefore it will be important for you to integrate and become an active member of the team.  This can at times, feel like a very difficult task, since the surgical services are always very busy, and the student's roles may be confusing. The most useful tools to help with this acclimation will be the "Medical Student Handbooks" (links are located at the right).  It is the expectation that you will read the material on these pages and be familiar with it BEFORE you rotate on a service.  This will make it easier for the residents to interact with each of you and will give you a point of orientation for you to start to become an important team member.

Evaluation - This is a clinical rotation.  Therefore you evaluation will be based mostly on your clinical performance on a daily basis.  Each student will have at least one presentation to prepare and present at the Friday morning conference and this will be included in the overall evaluation.  Dr. Vernenkar also conducts exit interviews with each of the medical students.  We will also ask that each of you evaluate the rotation.
