St. Barnabas Hospital, Bronx, New York

St. Barnabas Hospital is the flagship of the St. Barnabas Hospital Healthcare Network, a major healthcare system serving the Bronx community.  Proud of its history, St. Barnabas traces its origins to a home for incurables founded in the Bronx in 1866.  Today, as a high-tech, 461-bed acute care hospital and Level I Trauma Center, St. Barnabas retains deep roots in the community.

 

A nonsectarian, not-for-profit hospital, St. Barnabas provides high quality inpatient, outpatient, and emergency medical, mental health, and dental services at multiple locations throughout the borough.  The network also includes a 199-bed skilled nursing facility and Medicaid managed care plan.  Other facts about St. Barnabas includes:

 

  • 25,000 hospital admissions annually

  • 100,000 emergency visits

    - Approximately 1,500 trauma evaluations annually – Level I trauma center is one of the busiest in New York City

  • Level III Neonatal Unit

  • First State-designated Stroke Center in the Bronx

  • Designated AIDS Center

  • New Cardiac Catherization Laboratory and Interventional Radiology Suite

  • Cancer Center

  • Teaching Hospital

    - Training more than 250 physicians annually

    - One of the largest Emergency Medicine Residencies in the U.S.

    - D.O. Surgical Residency based in a Level I Trauma Center in the U.S.

As a teaching hospital, St. Barnabas is affiliated with the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. 

 

Our Community

The Bronx is racially and ethnically diverse: 48.4% Hispanic; 31.2% Black/African American; 14.5% White; 5.9%  Other (U.S. Census, 2000).  Low socioeconomic status among Bronx residents has severe health implications.  Below is a table of the demographics of the communities that St. Barnabas Hospital serves.  It should be noted that Bronx residents in the Hunts Point, Mott Haven, Highbridge, Morrisania, and Central Bronx neighborhoods report the highest level of poverty and poor health among all 42 New York City Department of Planning Neighborhoods.  The Bronx community enjoys a health fair at UCHC.
