Dermatology Residency (DO)

Message from Program Director

Cindy Hoffman, D.O., F.A.O.C.D.

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Saint Barnabas Hospital Dermatology Residency Program sponsored by the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM). We are a fully approved, three-year program with particular emphasis on clinical dermatology, dermatopathology and dermatologic surgery.

Our program is dedicated to providing advanced and concentrated training in the field of Dermatology. Providing the highest-quality educational opportunities to the residents is our major mission. This program also provides progressive learning experiences that develop the attitudes, skills, and knowledge of an osteopathic physician to efficiently provide quality specialized dermatologic care, both inpatient and outpatient.

St. Barnabas Hospital, one of the busiest hospitals in New York City, is a vibrant and integral part of the Bronx community, and the hospital continues to expand.  Primarily providing medical care to an indigent population, our residents are constantly exposed to a variety of pathology.  Residents are well-versed in allergy and immunology, oncology, environmental disease, venereal disease, HIV infections, and tropical diseases as they relate to dermatology.

Our residents are also proficient in:

1. Dermatopathology (weekly didactics and practicals with a dedicated dermatopathologist)

2. Inpatient care (daily consultations and rounds)

3. Dermatologic surgery (general, cosmetic, and Moh’s surgery)

4. Literature review (journal clubs, etc)

5. Current and up-to-date knowledge (strict didactics, board review, academic conferences)

Apart from on-site hospital training, our residents are required to rotate through Pediatric Dermatology, Radiation Oncology, private offices, and attend local and national meetings/conferences.  All residents are allowed adequate elective time to pursue special interests.

In addition, our departmental affiliations with both Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine allow our residents to work side-by-side with other residents and attending physicians, access to more research opportunities, and participation in additional didactic sessions including Grand Rounds, etc.

I invite you to navigate this web-site and hope that you find it helpful.  Given your interest in the field of dermatology, I wish you a success in your endeavor!
