“An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure”.
-
Injuries are the leading cause of death
in persons between the ages of 1 and 44 years.
-
Every year 150,000 people in the United
States die from injuries, 2.3 million are hospitalized
and an estimated 23 million are treated in emergency
departments. The overall cost of trauma in this country
is approximately $158 billion per year, including lost
wages and disability. Injuries cause more potential
years of life lost than cancer and heart diseased
combined. In addition, statistics alone do not convey
the impact of accidental injury on survivors whose lives
are tragically cut short or irreversibly damaged.
-
The New York State Trauma Centers are
committed to the development, support and initiation of
injury prevention programs to assist in reducing
morbidity and mortality associated with unintentional
injuries.
“If a disease were killing our children in
the proportion that accidents are, people would be outraged
and demand that this killer be stopped”
C. Everett Koop,M.D.
Former U.S. Surgeon General
