Surgery

The decision to have surgery is always a difficult and important one. The Department of Surgery at St. Barnabas Hospital has skilled surgeons who provide dignified, comprehensive and focused attention to the surgical problems encountered in today's complex medical community.

 

Surgical Services:

 

  • General and laparoscopic surgery.  The surgeons at St. Barnabas have broad experience with standard laparoscopic techniques and approaches to surgery, such as gall bladder and appendix removals and hernia repairs. Surgeons discuss the nature of planned surgery with careful attention to both technique and approach providing each patient individual and personal care.

 

  • Breast surgery.  St. Barnabas has a dedicated female surgeon who specializes solely in breast care and breast surgery.  She has a direct affiliation with Columbia University Medical College and works with the St. Barnabas breast service to provide the most advanced techniques of breast diagnostic and surgical care.

 

  • Neurosurgery. The Neurosurgery team at St. Barnabas provides general and specialty care to diseases of the low back and neck such as herniated discs, pinched nerves, spinal stenosis, infections and tumors. They also operate on brain tumors and infections, stroke and all forms of trauma.

 

  • Trauma surgery. As a Level I Trauma Center, St. Barnabas receives the most serious and complex injuries from the Emergency Medical Services of the City of New York. The surgery is difficult and life saving and is performed by talented, highly skilled surgeons who rank among the finest. These highly trained surgeons also perform general surgery at St. Barnabas.

 

  • Vascular surgery. Dedicated and specialized vascular surgeons are available to perform the most difficult and highly technical vascular procedures.

 

  • Orthopedic surgery.  The full range of orthopedic procedures is performed at St. Barnabas, including joint replacements.  Highly complex podiatric procedures are also performed by the podiatrists affiliated with St. Barnabas.

 

  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery.  Complex breast procedures, repair of major facial fractures and other highly demanding procedures are performed as well as routine cosmetic and restorative surgery by skilled plastic surgeons.

 

Surgical residents dedicated to St. Barnabas provide 24-hour in-hospital assistance, but each patient has an individual and identified Board-certified or Board-eligible attending surgeon who is totally in charge of his or her care.
