Tens of
thousands of children in New York are abused every year. Many are
brutally beaten, burned or injured in other ways. Some are
molested or raped. Others endure emotional torture and neglect,
are denied adequate food, medical care and supervision. All of
them are denied the love and security that every child needs to
grow up with.
Child abuse
is deadly. In New York, an average of three children die from
abuse and neglect each week.
About the
Program
The St.
Barnabas Child Advocacy Center provides diagnostic evaluations and
treatment for children who are suspected of being abused or
neglected. Evaluations are conducted in a child-friendly setting
designed to minimize trauma and maximize safety for the entire
family.
Each child
receives a thorough physical examination from a medical expert and
a psycho-social evaluation from a bilingual social worker with
special training in child abuse, crisis counseling and forensic
interviewing.
When
necessary, the Program coordinates the evaluation with police, the
district attorney, and Administration for Children's Services.
Bilingual
parenting and prenatal classes are also offered to young mothers
and their children to prevent further abuse.
